A twelve-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Biscuit came into my clinic last spring because her owner had read about “cellular aging” supplements online and wanted to know which one to buy. Where does quercetin fit, and why do people keep pairing it with something else?
Quercetin shows up in a different research lane entirely: senescent cell biology, sometimes called senolytic research. Preclinical work on canine valve tissue from dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease found that quercetin paired with dasatinib reduced markers of cellular senescence, per a review on Journal of Veterinary Science. More clinically relevant to a general audience: a randomized controlled trial found that senior dogs receiving a senolytic and NAD+ precursor combination showed improved owner-assessed cognitive function, with 88.9% of dogs on the combination showing improvement versus 60% on placebo, according to a study on PMC. Quercetin’s own oral bioavailability in dogs is low too, around 4.6% absolute, which is a real limitation, but the design of these trials — combining quercetin with other compounds rather than dosing it alone — is part of why the signal looks stronger than resveratrol’s solo data.
Which one should you actually pick for your dog?
I’ll say what I actually believe here, because that’s what this column is for: for a dog whose owner is asking specifically about mobility, comfort, and slowing the visible signs of aging, I lean toward formulas built around quercetin’s senolytic research rather than resveratrol alone, and I say that fully aware resveratrol has the cleaner safety data. My reasoning isn’t about which molecule sounds newer. It’s that resveratrol’s canine research keeps landing on an immune profile that’s genuinely mixed, not clearly beneficial, while quercetin’s strongest canine data comes from trials that measured something owners can actually observe — cognitive function, joint tissue markers — not just blood levels of the compound itself. The counterargument is fair: quercetin’s own bioavailability problem is just as real as resveratrol’s, and most of the strongest quercetin data comes from combination protocols, not quercetin alone, so you can’t cleanly credit the flavonoid by itself. I still land on quercetin-containing formulas as the more defensible starting point, because the outcome measures in that research are closer to what an owner is actually trying to solve.

- Check whether the dose used in the product resembles anything tested in the cited research, not just a “proprietary blend.”

- Don’t expect either ingredient to reverse an existing mobility problem; the honest framing is “may help support” cellular health, not a cure.
