Postbiotics vs. Fish Oil for Dog Inflammation: Which One Actually Helps More?

A twelve-year-old Lab mix named Otis came into my exam room stiff through the hips, slow on the stairs, and — according to his owner — “just not himself” for about two months. Before we talked about any supplement, we talked about what “inflammation” actually meant for Otis: joint pain from osteoarthritis, confirmed on radiographs, not a vague wellness complaint. That distinction matters more than the aisle you shop in. Postbiotics and fish oil get lumped together as “anti-inflammatory,” but they don’t work the same way, they aren’t proven for the same things, and they don’t have the same weight of evidence behind them.
What these labels are actually claiming
“Postbiotic” is a newer, looser term than most owners realize. It generally refers to inert bacterial components or fermentation byproducts — heat-killed bacteria, cell-wall fragments, or short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate — that are added to a food or chew because they can act on gut immune tissue without needing to survive as live organisms. That’s the theoretical draw: no cold chain, no viability problem, and a more direct hit on gut-associated immune receptors.
“Fish oil” is a much older, narrower claim: a defined dose of EPA and DHA, the two long-chain omega-3 fatty acids that compete with arachidonic acid in the inflammatory cascade and are believed to shift the body toward less inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes. It’s a mechanism vets have been able to measure directly in dogs for over a decade.
Read the label and the bloodwork before the claim. If a bag says “supports a healthy inflammatory response,” ask what’s actually in it, at what dose, and whether that dose matches anything tested in a dog — not a petri dish, not a mouse.

Where postbiotics stand right now
The strongest recent look at this category is a 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of postbiotic administration in dogs, published in PMC. It pooled studies through October 2024, including 13 in vivo canine trials, and the honest finding is that meta-analysis of selected outcomes showed no statistically significant difference between postbiotic and control groups overall. The review’s authors point to small sample sizes, strain heterogeneity, and inconsistent study designs as the limiting factors — not necessarily a failed mechanism. Individual dog studies inside that review did find real signals: one supplement combining probiotics, prebiotics, and yeast extract lowered fecal calprotectin, a marker of intestinal inflammation, after about a month of use, and Bifidobacterium animalis postbiotics improved markers of antioxidant capacity in beagles. That’s real, but it’s early, and it’s mostly gut-level inflammation rather than joint or systemic inflammation.

Where fish oil stands right now
Fish oil has a longer paper trail specific to canine osteoarthritis, which is the condition most owners are actually asking about when they say “inflammation.” A randomized, controlled multicenter trial published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association found that dogs with osteoarthritis already on the NSAID carprofen were able to have their carprofen dose reduced when fed a diet supplemented with omega-3 fish oil — a clinically meaningful outcome, since lower NSAID exposure matters for a dog’s kidneys and GI tract over years of use. A separate multicenter veterinary practice assessment, indexed on PubMed, found that diets delivering roughly 3.4–3.5% of calories as omega-3 fatty acids improved objective measures of weight-bearing and lameness. The mechanism holds up in the lab too: higher-dose fish oil measurably cut neutrophil leukotriene B4 and macrophage interleukin-1 production in treated dogs, which is about as close as veterinary nutrition research gets to watching the inflammatory pathway itself respond.
That’s a structure/function claim, not a cure — fish oil doesn’t reverse joint damage, and dose matters enormously. A trace amount of omega-3 tacked onto a treat is not the same product as a diet or supplement formulated to hit that 3-4%-of-calories range.
The dogs I actually see this argument play out on
The owners I see most often aren’t choosing between postbiotics and fish oil in the abstract — they’re standing in an aisle with a fourteen-pound senior Shih Tzu who just started refusing the stairs, or a sixty-pound working-line shepherd whose gait changes after a long hike but looks fine at rest. I had a client last winter with a nine-year-old Beagle, thirty-one pounds, who’d started sleeping later into the morning and hesitating before jumping onto the couch — a change she’d only noticed because she tracks his weight and appetite in a notebook. We ran bloodwork first, confirmed there was nothing systemic driving it, then talked dosing math: a fish oil product with enough EPA/DHA per pound of dog to matter, taken daily for at least six to eight weeks before judging it, because that’s roughly the timeline the trial data supports. She wasn’t opposed to a postbiotic gut chew too, and I had no objection — but I was clear that it wasn’t standing in for the joint-specific dose.
Where they genuinely complement each other
Fish oil and postbiotics aren’t rivals fighting over the same job. A dog with diagnosed osteoarthritis and grossly normal stool doesn’t need a postbiotic to manage joint pain — the evidence for that indication isn’t there yet. A dog with intermittent soft stool, gut-driven inflammation, or a history of antibiotic use is a much more defensible postbiotic candidate, independent of whatever joint supplement is also on board. Layering them makes sense when each is addressing the inflammation it’s actually been studied for, not when one is a substitute for the other. For inflammation specifically tied to joints — the osteoarthritis complaint that brings most owners in the door — fish oil is the better-supported choice today. It has multicenter, controlled trials in dogs, a defined effective dose range, and a measured effect on the inflammatory pathway itself. Postbiotics aren’t disproven; they’re underpowered. The 2025 meta-analysis is honest about that, and honest is what this panel scores for. If a dog’s issue is gut-centered rather than joint-centered, a postbiotic earns its place. If the complaint is stiffness, slowness on stairs, or a vet-confirmed osteoarthritis diagnosis, put the fish oil label next to the dosing math first.
